Travellers planning a trip to the vibrant island nation of Cuba will need to take note of a significant upcoming change in entry requirements. Starting July 1, 2025, Cuba will officially replace its traditional tourist cards (Tarjeta del Turista) with a mandatory electronic visa (e-Visa) system for nearly all international visitors.

What made the decision to introduce a Cuba eVisa?

The Cuban Ministry of Tourism (MINTUR) stated that the following key reasons drive the decision to replace tourist cards with mandatory e-Visas:

Reason 1: Streamlining entry procedures: The digital system aims to make the entry process more efficient for travellers and border officials.

Reason 2: Enhancing security: Electronic visas offer a more secure method of verifying traveller information.

Reason 3: Reducing paperwork: The online portal eliminates the need for physical cards and manual processing, contributing to a more environmentally friendly approach.

Reason 4: Centralising the visa process: The eVisaCuba portal provides a single platform for applications, making it more convenient for travellers to apply from anywhere.

Who Needs the New Cuba e-Visa?

  1. Effective July 1, 2025, nearly all international travellers must obtain a Cuba e-Visa before arrival.
  2. A key exception: Most Canadian citizens flying directly from Canada will have their e-Visa integrated into their airline ticket.
  3. However, Canadians travelling to Cuba with stopovers in other countries will need to apply for the e-Visa independently.
  4. The new e-Visa requirement now includes travellers from countries previously visa-exempt, such as China and Russia.

Note: Given ongoing discussions, the details of this new e-Visa policy could still be subject to modifications.

How to Apply for a Cuba e-Visa?

The official eVisaCuba portal is the online hub for the new mandatory e-Visa. Applicants will complete forms, upload documents, and track their application digitally, eliminating consulate visits and mail.
